Your Signature Diet is based, predominantly, on a ‘paleo’ diet and incorporates foods that were eaten by our pre-agricultural, hunter-gatherer ancestors—foods humans are genetically adapted to eat. The traditional Paleolithic diet is based on the foods eaten by our hunter-gatherer ancestors in north-east Africa during the Paleolithic era—the period spanning about 2.6 million years ago to the beginning of the agricultural revolution some 10,000 years ago. The main foods eaten were meats from freshly killed land animals, fish and birds, as well as tubers (yams). Back-up foods included legumes, soft seeds and nuts while occasional condiments were honey, eggs, and seasonal fruits and berries. Wild vegetables, herbs and water-weeds were medicinal foods.
This is the diet humans evolved to eat.
Today, most paleo diets diverge from the traditional Paleolithic foods. They are based on the North American and European interpretations over the last 10,000 years which include fruits and berries as main foods, along with harvested vegetables and oils (such as olive, coconut, avocado, macadamia and walnut). While these foods add specific nutrition, variety, taste and entertainment to the traditional Paleolithic diet, they can still cause health problems for some people with weakened or compromised immune systems – and if you are suffering from chronic illness, autoimmune disease or cancers the chances are your immune system is under stress. The human immune system can have difficulty dealing with the naturally occuring defence chemicals (poisons and toxins) found in all plants including vegetables, fruits and oils. For example, gluten is one such naturally occurring defense chemical that many people have a problem eating!
The human immune system can also struggle to deal with other modern foods such as cereal grains, dairy, nightshade vegetables (potatoes, capsicum, tomatoes etc), refined sugars and processed foods, which were not part of our ancestral menu. While most people can tolerate these foods when they are young and healthy, many people experience health problems as they age and their immune system becomes less efficient.
